Hail to the
Chief!!

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is now the third leading cause of death in the United States.  There
are 12 million people currently diagnosed with COPD, and another 12 million that are undiagnosed.  COPD is
the leading cause of disability within the nation.  Every four minutes someone with COPD dies.

On March 8th Helen Nichols Alpha-One patient and myself met with both Senator Max Baucus and Senator
Jon Tester and their healthcare staffers to discuss the Medicare Respiratory Therapy Initiative.  On March
9th we shared breakfast and coffee with them.  On the afternoon of March 9th we met with Congressman
Denny Rehberg and his healthcare staffers.  Each representative was gracious with their time and willing to
better understand COPD, the role of the Respiratory Therapist and the need for reimbursement for our
clinical practice.

The Respiratory Therapy Initiative is proposing to revise the Medicare stature to add recognition of
respiratory therapy services as a separate Medicare Part B benefit and to permit qualified respiratory
therapists to provide respiratory therapy services under the general supervision of a physician.  This revision
would improve patient access to Respiratory Therapists in the physician office setting.

On March 8th, 2011 HR 941, the Medicare Respiratory Therapy Initiative, was introduced in the House of
Representatives by Congressman Mike Ross of Arkansas. The Senate is expected to shortly introduce a
companion bill by Senator Mike Crapo of Idaho.
Thank you for the letters that you sent and the petitions that were signed on behalf of this initiative!  Your
voices were heard!  It is critical that you continue to communicate the importance of this legislation!  Please
use Capital Connection through the AARC in order to facilitate your letters of support!

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to represent the Respiratory Therapists within the state of
Montana!  It is an amazing gift to be able to advocate for our patients on a federal level and tell the story of
who we are and what we do!  I am humbled and blessed to be associated with each Respiratory Therapist in
the state of Montana!
Sincerely,
Pattie Johnsey
